Broken Hill Information

Broken Hill is known as an isolated mining town in New South Wales. It has been nicknamed “The Silver City” and has a population of about 20,000 people. It is Australia’s longest-lived mining city and was established in 1844 by the explorer Charles Sturt.

As mining being quite prevalent it is well worth taking a mining tour while in Broken Hill. Also the first noticeable thing when you get to Broken Hill is how many houses are built completely out of corrugated iron. Broken Hill is a town with real outback Australia feeling.

Apart from its strong mining roots that lead to the creation of the town, there are some absolutely fascinating tourist attractions for travellers to see. Pro Hart one of Australia’s most famous artists lived in Broken Hill and the Pro Hart Art Gallery featuring the artist’s hand painted Rolls Royce is a good starting point.

Broken Hill is packed with history, galleries and artistic interests. The Sculpture Symposium is another great site to see. Overlooking the beautiful picturesque red outback the carved out rocks are surreal and provide the perfect holiday photo snap.

Nearby Broken Hill is the old town of Silverton. Set in the backdrop of the desert, this place is a must stop place on your travelling destination. There are camel rides for you to enjoy and the atmosphere is truly a Western outback feel. The area has even used as a backdrop in some very famous Australian movies such as Mad Max 2 and The Adventures of Pricilla Queen of the Desert.

Although Broken Hill isn’t the biggest in population, the nightlife is always thriving. There are many clubs open most nights of the week till the early hours of the morning. Great clubs to go see are the Musician’s Club and the Democratic Club.
