Forbes Information

Forbes in New South Wales is located on the Lachlan River with a population of about 7,500 people. John Oxley discovered the area passing through on his exhibition but it wasn’t until 1861 when Harry Stephens, nicknamed “German Harry” discovered gold in the area that the town grew significantly.

Today Forbes is a prosperous farming town with many historic buildings dating back to the 1800’s. The cemetery in town provides history and discover the story of Ben Hall one of Australia’s most notorious scoundrel bushrangers at the Forbes museum.

Lake Forbes also known as “Lagoon” is the perfect place for a visit. Whether you go fishing, canoeing or enjoy a quiet picnic, the lake is a very tranquil place.

Just a few kilometres south of Forbes is a place called Gum Swamp, which featured, in the famous Geographic Magazine. The native bird and wildlife are enchanting and nature lovers should visit here at sunrise or sunset for the best times.

Visitors to Forbes are encouraged to see the Centenary of Federation Heritage Trail. The Trail covers all famous heritage buildings in Forbes and some of the best are the St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Town Hall site, the Lands office of 1898 and the previous residence of John Holderness Bates.

Forbes also has some very well established wineries. Lachlan Valley Wines was established in 1886 and is still one of the most popular wineries in the region. Another fantastic vineyard to visit is the Sandhills Vineyard.

The National bank and Art Galley in Forbes is another hot spot. Located in Lachlan Street the Art gallery contains various local and overseas exhibitions for you to enjoy.

A unique place to visit in Forbes is the Forbes worm Farm. Located in Shorthorn Street it is open seven days and something a little different for you to experience.
