Maitland Information

Maitland is a city situated on the Hunter River in the Lower Hunter Valley region approx 166 kilometres north of Sydney and boasting a population of over 60,000 people.

With its proximity to the Hunter River, Maitland was the main staging area for deliveries to the prosperous valley region and until the Victorian gold rush era in the mid 1800’s was the second largest town on the Australian Continent.

Tourism is one of the regions main driving forces with the Walka Water Works, Maitland Regional Art Gallery, the amazing Maitland Gaol and the historic port town of Morpeth, now a bustling shopping area famous for Fashion Boutiques, a plethora of Cafes and Speciality Shops.

Activities and Attractions are numerous in Maitland and the surrounding area. Featuring the Hunter Valley Steamfest, Morpeth Jazz Festival and the Bitter and Twisted Beer Festival among many others, there is plenty to occupy everyone.

Visit the amazing Australian Alpaca Barn for Fashion and Accessories made from this incredibly versatile material that is among the softest and warmest in the world. For the Historical buffs, there are many fine examples of Architecture dating back to the 1820’s including the fabulous Gothic structure of St Mary’s Church.

With hundreds of eateries in the region, you will be spoilt for choice including Tea Rooms, Café Bars and some of the top fine dining experiences in the Valley like the Old George and Dragon Restaurant, classed as one of the finest in the state.

Although the Hunter Valley Region is ultimately known for its Scenic Beauty, nature trails, walks and fantastic food and wine, the Adrenalin Junkies are also catered for. Experience one of the most thrilling encounters imaginable as you are tossed, turned, stretched and spun during an exhilarating forty minutes of Aerobatic Manoeuvres in an Historic Spits Biplane that will leave a grin on your face.
