Narrandera Information

Narrandera with a population of about 4,500 people lies on the junction of Stuart and Newell Highways and was first discovered by famous explorer Charles Sturt in 1829.

Being the gateway to the Murrumbidgee region it is a popular destination for travellers and some of the town’s great highlights include:

St Mel’s Church and John O’Brien Heritage House – The House where Father Pat (John O’Brien) lived during his 1917-1944 tenure as St Mel’s Parish Priest. The desk at which he wrote his first famous poem is still in its place. Tours welcome by appointment.

6PS Wagga Wagga Paddle Steamer – In November 1918 the Wagga Wagga sprang a leak at Roach’s Mill Wharf, it was run down stream and was sunk. The wreck of the Wagga Wagga can be seen from the viewing plank on the northern side, upstream of the railway bridge when the Murrumbidgee River is low.

Narrandera Rail Bridge – The Narrandera Rail Bridge is considered to have “significant merit in engineering heritage”. It was designed by acclaimed British Engineer John Flower. The design is one commonly seen in British Colonies.

JB Fountain – The Hankinson Fountain was creates by Royal Doulton and imported from England by a benevolent mayor as a tribute to the young lives lost in World War 1.

Lake Talbot – Only 1km from the town centre, this lake was formed in 1924. The Lake Talbot Pools are a great form of entertainment for you and the family to enjoy October to March. Four pools, two slides, BBQ and picnic facilities set in the amphitheatre of lawns.

East Street is Narrandera’s main street which hosts a range of services including hairdressers, grocery stores and numerous specialty boutiques.
