Nelson Bay Information

Nelson Bay is a major coastal tourism centre in Port Stephens with a relatively small population of about 5,000 people. The major attraction is the beautiful coastal playground. Enjoy whale watching, diving, surfing, swimming, fishing and other wonderful aquatic activities.

Apart from the Ocean lifestyle, the Tomaree National park is nearby for you to explore if you like wildlife and bushwalking. Why not enjoy the perfect picnic with Australian wildlife.

Nelson Bay is also famous for its port where you can experience many bottlenose dolphins. Whale watching tours are extremely popular when coming to Nelson Bay. Every year thousands of Humpback whales pass through the coast here and the best times are between May to July every year.

If you are looking for the best day trip then about one and a half hour drive from Nelson Bay is the Hunter Valley wine region. Some of Australia’s finest wineries are located in the region and all will dazzle you with their wine tasting experience. Most have restaurants so why not stay for a nice lunchtime meal.

Another great Australian adventure near Nelson Bay is the Stockton sand dunes. Tours will take you to a place where the sand dunes meet the ocean. An unforgettable experience and the tour guides will even point out some of the many Aboriginal sites nearby.

Nelson Head inner lighthouse built in 1872 is also well worth seeing. Originally the lighthouse was powered by kerosene lamps and occupied by lighthouse keeper William Glover. Today the lighthouse is solar powered as it was upgraded in 1995.

Nelson Bay also contains many pathways along the port and ocean. In town pushbike hire is available and having such an extensive number of cycling tracks to choose from you will definitely enjoy the experience.
