Parramatta Information

Parramatta also nicknamed “Parra” is a large suburb in the west of Sydney situated on the Parramatta River. Originally established in 1788 by the British colony for farming it has a large population of about 140,000 people.

Heritage buildings are everywhere throughout Parramatta boasting some of Australia’s oldest buildings on the Register of the National Estate. The Old Government House Built in 1799, the Parramatta Town Hall and the Tudor Gates are two of the most visited by tourists. It is also well worthwhile seeing Brislington, in Marsden Street and Lancer Barracks which date back to one of three buildings dating back to 1822.

Apart from Heritage Buildings, Parramatta is today a major business and commercial centre sometimes nicknames the “Second central business district of Sydney”. With Australia’s second largest shopping centre “Parramatta Westfield” there is plenty of places to find your holiday gifts.

At the Charles Street Weir is the Parramatta Ferry Wharf, where you can take the Ferry run by the Sydney Ferrier Cat Ferry service. On your journey you will no doubt enjoy the scenery of the lush green banks of the Parramatta River. The ferry runs all the way from Sydney to Parramatta.

A great experience not to miss is to see Parramatta by a hot air balloon. Cloud 9 Hot Air Balloons will be happy to cater for your adventure and provide you with the opportunity to capture the perfect holiday photo from above.

Parramatta boasts over 140 places to eat at for your enjoyment. There are also many nightlife and entertainment places to see and visit in Parramatta. The best live venues are the Laugh Garage, the Mars Hill Cafe and the Parramatta Riverside Theatre. For nightclubs try the Roxy, Eco Lounge and the Oneworld Sport Parramatta.
