Port Macquarie Information

Port Macquarie in New South Wales is a large costal town with a population of about 70,000 people and was first established in 1821 as a penal settlement for convicts.

A very popular tourist and retirement destination, Port Macquarie is well known for its beaches and waterways. It also has a very large koala population and is home to the famous Billabong Koala Park.

Beach surfing is excellent and there are many beaches to choose from with the most popular being Nobbys, Oxley, Shelly and Lighthouse beach. Lighthouse Beach also features the Tacking Point Lighthouse which is manned by the surf lifesaving club.

The Glasshouse theatre is an amazing arts theatre and concert hall like no other in Australia and built to maximise performance experiences. Truly amazing architecture makes the Glasshouse a must experience place in Port Macquarie. There is also a 600 metre regional art gallery and 1820ís heritage display to see.

Another great place to visit is Timbertown. Set in 87 acres of natural forest, Timbertown is a timewarp place where you will step back in time to the 1880ís. The entire village recreates the achievements of our pioneers. There is a Clydesdale drawn carriage through the forest, miniature railway, heritage playground, theatre, nursery, art gallery and more.

To explore history of Port Macquarie visit the Historical Society Museum in Clarence street. There museum houses a unique collection of over 20,000 historical artefacts dating back to penal settlement including original convict made furniture, clothing, photographs and other rare treasures.

An event not to miss in Port Macquarie is the Festival Of The Sun which is an outdoor music festival held every year in December at the Sundowner Breakwall Tourist Park. The celebration features Australian music set in a top location right on town beach. Definitely donít miss event.
