Yamba Information

Yamba is a small coastal town on the north east of the New South Wales coastline. Situated at the mouth of the Clarence River, this rural community has a growing population of over 7,000 and was voted the Top Town in Australia by the Australian Traveller.

There is a difference of opinion on the meaning of the town’s name, one theory is that Yamba is the local Aboriginal word for ‘Headland’, however, the more likely derivation is from an Aboriginal word, ‘Yumbah’ meaning a rough edible shellfish, similar to an oyster that can be found clinging to the rock pools in the area.

In recent years, the town has become a hive of activity with younger baby boomers making a sea change to the incredible climate and new businesses are springing up throughout the region. The other reason is the tourism, this once little known village has 11 beaches and is surrounded by National Parks and other Major Attractions along the coast and is going through a period of unprecedented growth.

Sitting across the estuary of the River Clarence, is Iluka and the Iluka Nature Reserve, a World Heritage Listed area of the largest remaining Littoral Rainforest in NSW. To the south is Yuraygir National Park, 60 kilometres of rocky cliffs, pristine beaches, where the temperate southern climate and the tropical northern climate overlap and which produces some of the most diverse ranges of Flora and Fauna in the country.

Further south is probably one of the most famous surfing towns in the state – Angourie has what is described as the most popular surf breaks in Australia.

As with most Coastal Resorts, Fishing and Sailing are extremely popular. The added attraction of Yamba is the Waterways and Tributaries of the River and the 100 plus small islands that lie upstream that are an Adventurer’s Paradise waiting to be rediscovered.
