Barcaldine Information

Barcaldine, Queensland is a small town of about 1,900 people who live here. Main industries include sheep grazing and the town actually got its name from the sheep station nearby called Barcaldine downs.

The region plays a major part in the formation of the Australian Labour party in 1891. There was a sheep shearer’s strike where over 1,300 people marched, protested and fought for their rights to work the 8 hour day and no more.

At this point of protest is the tree of knowledge which remains an icon of the town. In 2006 someone actually tried to poison the tree. Very sad considering it was at this very tree the Australian Labour party (Today’s current party in power of Australia) formed its meetings and grew the party back in 1891.

Barcaldine has one of the best climates for the budding gardener. It is sometimes recognised and dubbed the “Carden City of the West”. Many tourists will be inspired with the greenery in the town.

One place of must visit in the town is the Workers Heritage Museum. This award winning museum highlights and reconstructs historic workplaces of throughout Queensland. There are landscaped gardens and interesting features to inspire not just Australians but overseas people as well.

The Barcaldine District Folk Museum is another must stop destinations on your route. Full of Queensland memorabilia from the past it will make you think of how technology has changed from the olden days. There is even a rare Edison gramophone dating way back to the 1900’s.

If you are looking for heritage in the town then look no further than the Masonic Lodge on Beach Street. Originally a Bank way back in 1908 it is a prime example of the rural outback heritage here.
