Blackall Information

Blackall in Queensland is another small town with a population of about 1,300 people. The town is situated on the Barcoo River and its primary industry arises from sheep and grazing.

Explorer Thomas Mitchell discovered Blackall way back in 1846 however the town is named after Sir Samuel Blackall which was Queensland’s second governor.

A legendary character named Jack Howe in 1892 sheered a total of 321 sheep in 7 hours and 40 minutes, which became a world record for its time. The record was only broken when the electric sheers were invented in the 1950’s. At the time of Jack setting the record to town claimed it was the home of the black stump. A replica Black stump still exists in town and good place to take your holiday picture.

Temperature in Blackall is fantastic at a medium temperature of 30 degrees throughout most parts of the year.

Blackall was the first place to bore the artesian for water. When successful the town had ample water to thrive and expand and the Blackall Woolscour was established.

Make sure to visit the Blackall Woolscour. This is a historic steam driven wool washing plant which operated from 1908 to 1978 is one of the only wool operations left in Australia with all the old machinery still in its place. Today this is like a giant wool industry history museum and is well worth the visit.

Blackall’s Local swimming pool is definitely a great place to be and cool off on days it gets too hot. The swimming pool is not just your ordinary pool but more like a tropical swimming resort directly in the middle of the town. Come see the outback in Queensland and visit Blackall.
