Cairns Information

Cairns was established in 1876 and named after William Wellington Cairns. It is about 1,700 Kms from Brisbane and has a population of about 160,000 people.

Originally it was settled by miners for the Hodgkinson River goldfields but these days the primary industry is mainly sugar cane and tourism.

Weather in Cairns is a warm tropical climate with monsoons in the wet season. Tourists flock to Cairns because all year round the temperature is nice and warm with humidity and plenty of sunshine.

Cairns is Australia’s number one popular tourist destination compared to its population. The city contains hundreds of activities from golfing, white water rafting, crocodile farms, food and wine tours, scenic flights, and boat cruises to nature coach tours into the Daintree Rainforest, Atherton Tableland and Paronella Park.

The famous Great Barrier Reef is only one hour away on a boat and provides plenty of action for divers, snorkelers and fisherman.
