Coolangatta Information

Coolangatta has a population of around 5,000 people and is a town of Queensland situated right on the state border near New South Wales.

Like the rest of Queensland, Coolangatta has a beautiful subtropical climate with warm humid summers and cool moist winters.

Coolangatta is an aboriginal word meaning “splendid view”. Tourists visiting here will agree that the name lives up to its reputation and Coolangatta makes a great destination for a relaxing picturesque holiday.

The area is definitely a beach lover’s paradise. Some of the best surfing conditions are in Coolangatta. The two most popular beaches to visit are Greenmount Beach and Rainbow Bay.

It was in Coolangatta that Queensland’s first official life saving club was formed in 1909 at Greenmount beach.

There is also plenty of beach fishing with popular catches being tailor, bream and snapper. Ask the locals and they will point out the secret spots where you are sure to get a good catch.

If you prefer diving to surfing or fishing then take a dive at Kirra and Cook Islands to the south.

During the cooler parts of the year visit the Snapper rocks or Point Danger viewing platforms, as chances are you may see whales on their annual migration. You are also bound to spot dolphins and birds all year round.

More Eco nature can be found at the Southern Points Promenade where you will find 36kms of walkways, bikeways and viewing platforms. You may even want to view the Captain Cook Lighthouse.

Every June Coolangatta holds the Wintersun Festival which is a two week attraction featuring restored cars, hotrods and revival bands playing music from the 1950’s and 1960’s.
