Richmond Information

Richmond, Queensland is proud to be recognised as one of the state’s most attractive outback towns. Situated half way between Townsville and Mount Isa, the town is easily accessed by tourists via the Flinders Highway or the Great Northern Railway.

Links with the neighbouring towns of Winton and Hughenden have been forged to create Australia’s Dinosaur Trail, and a drive around this trail will find you in the centre of some of the most notable fossils in the world.

Millions of years ago, in prehistoric times, Richmond was submerged beneath the Ancient Inland Sea. Today, the fossilised remains of this sea’s plants and animals can be found at what is now known as Kronosaurus Korner.

The fossil museum was opened when a 100-million year old pliosaur was discovered on a Richmond property in 1989. Australia’s most exciting fossil museum is a must visit, with new fossilised finds being preserved and displayed on a regular basis.

Richmond is also home to Lake Fred Tritton. An easy accessible boat ramp allows many water activities such as water skiing, jet skiing, boating, fishing, swimming and canoeing. Other facilities for visitors include free barbeques, picnic areas, a playground and an exercise park.

While at the lake, why not visit the Richmond Community Bush Tucker Gardens for an award winning experience. A showcase of the native flora explores the indigenous culinary and medicinal uses of many plants. The garden’s main feature, a waterfall, is a beautiful sight for visitors. Moon rocks, fossilised wood and gidgee stones can be found around the garden, and may interest the inquisitive explorer.

For those wanting to learn more about Richmond, a Heritage Walk is run regularly, and starts from the Cobb & Co Coach.
