Port Broughton Information

Port Broughton is a small town with a population of about 1,000 people located on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. The town is named after the Broughton River and was first established in 1876 when the town’s jetty was constructed to ship grain grown from the nearby areas.

Today Port Broughton is still influenced by agriculture and the township has grown to also include a great commercial fishing economy. Many recreational fishing enthusiast come to holiday in Port Broughton for its magnificent jetty that offers excellent fishing and crabbing for Blue Manner crabs.

For discovery of the town’s history the historical museum is a great place to discover. Located on Harvey Street, the museum contains an excellent array of historical records, artefacts and photographs dating back to early days of European settlement. The museum also tells the story of the local native Narangga Aboriginal people who lived in the area prior to contact with white people.

Another great museum to see in Port Broughton is the Cottage Museum also located on Harvey Street in the old school building. The cottage museum give a great inside as to what life was like for the earliest of settlers in the area.

If you are looking for a great place to eat in town then look no further than the Palate2Palette Restaurant. Run by Grant and Helen Rowland the restaurant is located in the main street of Port Broughton in a recently renovated 100 year old building. Grant is also a great artist in town and his artworks are exquisite in detail depicting the local scenery of Port Broughton.

Another fantastic historical building in town is the Port Broughton Hotel located at the entrance to the town’s jetty on Bay Street. The Hotel offers a relaxed country style atmosphere and is a great place to stop for a drink.
