Scamander Information

Scamander in Tasmania is a quiet seaside town and popular tourist destination for those seeking a relaxing beachside holiday without the crowds found in many other holiday places.

Scamander was originally founded by John Wedge in 1825 who named the area Yarmouth after the English port Great Yarmouth however in later years the town was renamed Scamander.

A notable feature to the town is the Scamander Bridge that spans across the Scamander River. The first timber bridge across the river was constructed in 1865 that collapsed while cattle were crossing the bridge. Further bridges were built however all succumbed to floods. In 1936 the Truss Bridge was built which still stands today alongside the modern bridge connecting the northern and southern districts of the town.

An environmental tourist attraction is the Scamander Forest Reserve and the Trout Creek Reserve. Popular with nature lovers the reserves offer several BBQ and picnic areas and camping is also permitted in designated areas. The reserves alongside the river are also popular for angling enthusiasts with plenty of great fish to catch including bream, trout, salmon, mullet and trevalla.

For the Beach lover, Scamander offers miles and miles of white sandy beaches along its pristine coastline for swimming and relaxing on the sand. There are also a few good surfing spots for those seeking some wave action and fun.

The Scamander River Golf Course is also a favourite hit for golfing enthusiasts coming to town. The nine-hole golf course features a challenging layout set amongst some very picturesque scenery and is located off Coach Road near the mouth of the Scamander River.

There are plenty of great accommodation places in Scamander including Pelican Sands, Blue Seas Holiday Villas, the Scamander Beach Shack, Scamander Tourist Park, The Sanctuary Caravan Park and the Scamander Beach Resort Hotel.
