Apollo Bay Information

Apollo Bay in Victoria is a popular tourist destination with a population of about 2,500 people. The township was named after the Apollo sailing vessel which sheltered in the bay in 1845 from a strong storm. Apollo was established for fishing and whaling in its early days but today most of the economy of Apollo Bay is derived from tourism.

Located on the Great Ocean Road, Apollo Bay is renowned for its magnificent beaches. Nearby Apollo Bay you can also find the famous Twelve Apostles which is one of Victorias best tourism drawcards. The Twelve Apostles are spectacular rock stacks that rise up over 70 metres in the air and a must see attraction of Apollo Bay.

There is also plenty of wildlife in the area especially Koalas that can be found in many locations. In particular, we recommend visiting the Cape Otway Lighthouse in the Cape Otway National Park which is located just 20 minutes west of Apollo Bay. The lighthouse is one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in Australia and has been in operation since its construction in 1848.

Apollo Bay is a great place for popular beach activities like kayaking or canoeing.

Fishing in Apollo Bay is magnificent too with plenty of fish to catch in the bass straight waters. A charter is recommended and there are heaps of prize fishes like snapper and barracouta in the area.

An event not to miss in Apollo Bay is the annual music festival held every year in March. The festival features three days of nonstop action with loads of different musicians and bands. There are eleven stages and performances are from early morning till late.

Another great event in Apollo Bay is the Great Ocean Sports festival held every year in February. The two day event is packed with water and land based sporting competitions from the sporting clubs in Apollo Bay.
