Melbourne Information

Melbourne is the capital of Victoria and the most populous city with over 4 million people living in Melbourne and the surrounding suburbs. The city is located on the Yarra River and was established in 1835. By the 1850’s the city became one of the wealthiest cities in Australia due to the Victorian gold rush.

Melbourne has always been one of Australia’s most vibrant cities and is very rich in culture. There are plenty of festivals and events happening all year round and Melbourne leads the country for performances especially in art, comedy, film and television.

Melbourne is also home to some of Australia’s best sporting events such as Aussie Rules Football, Cricket, Tennis, Australian Grand Prix and the famous Melbourne Cup horse race held every year on the first Tuesday in November.

Apart from sporting events, two famous events not to miss are the Melbourne International Film Festival and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. The film festival runs for three weeks and is the largest film festival in Australia with over 400 different films being screened in 50 different languages. The Comedy festival also runs for three weeks in the beginning of April and is the third largest comedy festival in the world.

The National Gallery of Victoria is also one of Australia’s best art galleries. Established in 1861 the gallery displays some of Australia’s finest artworks. The gallery has become so large that it had to be split between the Ian Potter Centre in Federation Square and the National Galley Victoria International located in St Kilda Road.

If you are visiting in winter, then a not to miss thing to do in Melbourne is to see an Australian Rules football match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Aussie Rules as it is nicknamed is Australia’s own unique sport and the tradition of the Australian culture.
