Phillip Island Information

Phillip Island is a famous island in Victoria located in the Bass Straight. Almost three and a half million people visit Phillip Island making it a hot spot tourist destination. The Island is also home to the Australian Grand Prix and home to the Superbike World Championship.

The main township of Phillip Island is called Cowes, which has a population of about 4,000 people. Most people visiting Phillip Island on holiday stay at Cowes, which was named after the seaside town on the Isle of Wright in England.

There is also plenty of wildlife to discover on Phillip Island. There are heaps of little penguins, koalas, kangaroos and wallabies to discover. Seal Rocks is another hot tourist attraction, which features the largest colony of fur seals in Australia.

Surfing is also excellent on the island with great surfing spots to discover. In the past Phillip Island held some great surfing events such as the Rip Curl Pro in 2005. Although Phillip Island no longer holds many surfing competitions, there are numerous point breaks, particularly to the west of the Island. The best surfing spots are Express Point, Summerland Point and Shelly beach.

The early history of Phillip Island is fascinating with Phillip Island hosting the first big sporting event, The Bathurst 1000 in 1960. Only three years later the racetrack moved to NSW. Today the Superbike Wold Championships at Phillip Island is world famous and people from all over Australia and the world flock to Phillip Island to see the motorbike race.

Apart from being known as the island with the famous bike race, Phillip Island also hosts the Pyramid Rock Festival. The rock festival is held every New Years Eve and runs for two nights of entertainment. There are two stages of live music performances and the festival is the perfect way to celebrate the New Year.
