Margaret River Information

Originally a chilled out surfie town, Margaret River has evolved into the ultimate smorgasbord of good food, fine wine and spectacular scenery - just a three-and-a-half hour drive south of Perth, itís a go. Fine world-class wineries, boutique breweries, and restaurants overlooking sweeping vineyards and surf breaks.

The wine is definitely top notch - the region produces less than one per cent of Australian wine, but wait for it - over 15 per cent of the countryís premium wine. I also hosts exquisite cheeses, jam, condiments, olives, marron (freshwater crayfish). And you canít beat this - there are even chocolate, fudge and ice-cream factories with free samples.

After you have recovered, explore networks of underground caves, a rugged coastline, squeaky-clean sandy beaches, turquoise water, towering forests and bush and coastal trails.

MARGARET RIVER HISTORY

The town and river are presumed to be named after Margaret Wyche, cousin of John Garrett Bussell (founder of Busselton) in 1831. The name is first shown on a map of the region published in 1839. European migrants lived in the area as early as 1850, with timber logging commencing in around 1870. By 1910, the town had a hotel also operating as a post office. After World War I, an attempt by the Government of Western Australia to attract migrants to Western Australia (known as Group Settlement) and establish farms in the region attracted settlers to the town. In 1922, over 100 settlers moved into the district. Today itís the hotspot for tourists and travellers and the place to be.
