Lyon Information

Lyon is a large city in with a population of about half a million people and is the second richest city in France next to Paris. The main industries to Lyon include banking, pharmaceutical, biotech and computer software development in particular computer games.

For tourism Lyon is known for its historical and cultural landmarks and the city is a prime example of the French culture. The city was founded by the Roman Lucius Munatius Plancus way back in 43 BC and was first named Lugdunum meaning “Hill of Lights”.

One of the best World Heritage listed sights of Lyon is the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière. Built between 1872 and 1896 the church is the dominating landmark with beautiful Romanesque architecture. One of the star attractions to the guided tour is the Museum of Sacred Art that draws in crowds annually in excess of a million people.

As with most other French cities the Opéra Nouvel (Opera House) is also very popular with visitors. The opera house was designed and named after Jean Nouvel, built back in 1756. It is the home to the Opéra National de Lyon one of Frances best opera companies.

For some ancient history, the hill of Fouurvière is an astonishing roman theatre well worth seeing on your holiday. The theatre was built around 15BC and is one of Lyon’s prime tourist sites with the Nuits de Fourviere festival being every year between June and July.

Art lovers will also enjoy the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon (Musée des beaux-arts de Lyon). The museum houses works of art from Ancient Egypt to the modern art era. It has been renowned as one of the best Museums to see in Europe.

For the Environmentalist the Parc de la Tête d’Or (Golden Head Park) and Jardin cotanique de Lyon are well worth a visit.
