Marseille Information

Marseille is the second largest city in France with a population of about one and a half million people. Located on the Mediterranean coast in the southeast of France, Marseille is one of the hottest tourist places as holidaymakers come to visit the French Riviera coastline and beach.

It is believed that human inhabitation in Marseille dates back nearly 25,000 years with a cave painting at Cosquer Cave dating back to the Palaeolithic times. Marseille was also a big Roman city and at the time of Roman occupation named “Massilia”.

With spectacular views the Notre-Dame de la Garde is one of the best spots to get a panoramic view over Marseille. The Catholic Church is situated 150 meters high and is a very prominent landmark visible almost from anywhere in Marseille.

The main port in Marseille is important to the cities economy where over 100 million tons of freight pass through every year. The Old Port or Vieux-Port as known by locals is where you will find hundreds of colourful fishing vessels docked. In tradition you can still buy locally caught fish and seafood at the Quais des Belges markets located near the port.

There are many museums in Marseille and one of the must-see is the Musée Cantini which is located near the Palais de Justice. The museum houses artworks directly associated Marseille including some famous works by the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso.

Another great cultural attraction is the Marseille is the Opera House. Built in the 18th century it is located near the Old Port at the heart of the city.

Marseille has been the setting to countless movie blockbusters. Some of the best to films set in Marseille include the Taxi and the Transporter film series, The Bourne Identity, love actually and the French Connection series.
