Nantes Information

Nantes in France is located on the Loire River and is a large city with around 300,000 people living in the area. The name of Nantes derives from the Roman name of Portus Namnetus during the Roman occupation back in 70BC.

There is much history to discover in the city as it was once invaded by the Saxons, Franks, Britons and Normans which have all have added to the cultural aspect of the city with their heritage and different influences in the way of life.

For the tourist or traveller, Nantes features many sights to see from castles, parks, gardens, churches and museums with historical significance. One of the best places to see is Château des Ducs de Bretagne (Castle of the Dukes of Brittany). Located on the banks of the Loire River, the castle is listed as a French historic icon by the French Ministry.

For the nature lover the Jardin des Plantes de Nantes is a must see botanical garden. Dating back to the 1600ís the botanical gardens are set amongst some spectacular environmental scenery. There are over 11,000 different plant species with a wide variety of waterways, ponds and even an artificial mountain to see.

The main city of Nantes also has plenty of great historical places to see. Popular places in the heart of the city are Place Royale and Place du Commerce.

For something a little more interesting the Isle of Nantes is very popular with tourists and travellers alike. Here a former shipyard has been turned into a leisure and tourist attraction, which include the Machines of the Isle of Nantes a very fascinating artistic creation.

Nantes contains some of Frances largest and newest concert halls including the Nantes Zénith and the famous Angers-Nantes opera house.
