Toulouse Information

Toulouse is a large city in France located on the banks of the Garonne River with a population of about 1.2 million people. Toulouse is well known by people interested in astronomy and aeronautics, as it is one of the biggest bases of the aerospace industry in Europe with Airbus calling it home.

Many will remember the city of Toulouse for hosting the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Not only were the French hosting the game but France beat Brazil in a stunning 3-0 final.

Some of the finest architecture can be found in Toulouse with the Capitole de Toulouse being its crown jewel. Built back in 1190 the building was the governing headquarters for people with wealth and influence. The name “Capitole” actually comes from the word “Capitulum”. Today the building houses the city hall and opera house (Théâtre du Capitole).

Nature lovers will also enjoy the Jardin des Plantes in Toulouse, which is an amazing 7 hectares of botanical gardens. Created back in 1730 there are over 1,300 species of plants and Napoleon built the surrounding buildings back in the battle of Toulouse.

For the arts the Musée des Augustins is a must visit place. The fine arts museum houses an impressive collection of sculptures and paintings from the Middle Ages.

There are many religion buildings in Toulouse in particular churches. One of the most popular with tourists is the Basilica of St. Sernin. Built way back in 1080 the church is extremely impressive and the crypt is a must see part of the church.

Education is also worth a mention in Toulouse. Like famous universities in Oxford and Paris the University of Toulouse (Université de Toulouse) is a world-renowned top-notch university. Many of the world’s brightest students come here to study their Doctorate.
