Fernando de Noronha

Fernando de Noronha is a set of 21 Brazilian islands located in the archipelago 350 kilometres off shore mainland Brazil. Although with only a permanent population just 3,100 people Fernando de Noronha is a Mecca hotspot of all tourist destinations visited in Brazil.

The main attraction to Fernando de Noronha is the wonderful beach lifestyle and in particular some of the best snorkelling and diving on the planet. With warm calm tranquil waters underwater diving visibility can be up to 50 metres. You won’t need your wetsuit here just make sure you bring an underwater camera to capture the beautiful ocean life.

There is also plenty of history to discover on Fernando de Noronha Island from its humble discovery in 1503 by the Portuguese. The island is named after Fernão de Loronha who was the first person to settle in the island and set up trade between the Portuguese and Brazilians. During the 1700-1900 the French took the Island for a short period and between 1938- 1945 it was the site of a political prison. Today it is all about tourism for Brazil.

The vast Flora, Fauna and Marine Life of Fernando de Noronha is staggering. There are many beaches to explore and in some cases you can find yourself immersed in beauty of being the only person to leave your footprints in the sand without any crowds.

Nature lovers will also enjoy the vast submerged volcanic mountains that surround the main island and a must do activity is to take a sailing tour around the island to discover its true wonders. So pristine is the island that any traveller to Fernando de Noronha is charged a small environmental preservation fee upon arrival.

There are also some of the best accommodation places set amongst tropical scenery such as the Pousada do Vale Resort which is highly recommended.
