Florianopólis is the main capital on the Island of Santa Catarina district in Brazil with a population of around half a million people. The history of the city dates back to the Tupi people who were Carijós Indians to a staggering 4,000 years ago through archaeology. The Indians used to call it the Meiembipe, which translated means “Mountain along the channel”.

Although Florianopolis’ economy is largely dependent on commerce the city has a great influence in tourism as it is located on an island surrounded by some pristine white sandy beaches making it a great holiday spot if you want both the city and beach life combined into one. There are also a number of historic sites from the original Azorean colonists to the famous Saõ José Fortress that attracts visitors in droves.

The Island is connected by three bridges with the most notable and famous being the Hercilio Luz Bridge that was built over 70 years ago and looks absolutely amazing at night when lit up.
