Fortaleza Information

Fortaleza is the 5th largest city in Brazil with a population of over 2 million people lying on the Atlantic Ocean. The city attracts tourists in droves who come for the beautiful sandy beaches, warm ocean water and nightlife with festivals that abundant all year round. When it comes to partying and nightlife the city has a reputation for being one of the “Wildest Monday nights in the world”.

A big attraction to the city is Iracema’s beach that features the Iracema Statue in the Massejana lagoon. The statue with its night-lights is a tribute to a famous novel by Josè de Alencar that tells the story of a relationship between a Portuguese named Martim and a Tabajara indigenous woman from Brazil.

For history and culture a hot spot to see is the Dragão do Mar Centre of Arts and Culture. The centre features a cinema, library, theatre and even a Planetarium for those interested in astronomy.

For those who love theme parks, Fortaleza is home to the world famous Beach Park. Located on Porto das Dunas beach the theme park has the world’s second largest waterslide nicknamed the “Insano” that is an impressive 41 meters high. The Aquatic Park is such a Mecca for tourism that it attracts nearly 700 thousand people every year.

Anyone interested in Scuba Diving will be happy to know that Fortaleza contains the Pedra da Risca do Meio State Marine Park. With an average yearly water temperature of 27 degrees, the water marine park is extremely popular amongst professional and amateur divers and is buzzing with marine life as it is off limits to fishermen.

If you like fresh seafood then Fortaleza must be your first stop in Brazil. Cooked with traditional Portuguese flavours the seafood is fresh and delicious with many night bars serving alcohol and seafood right on the beach.
