Düsseldorf Information

Düsseldorf is the capital of Rhine-Westphalia and the seventh most populated city in Germany. The first known inhabitants of Düsselforf date back to the 7th century when Germanic tribes farmed the area where the Düssel River flows into the Rhine River giving birth to its name (Dorf in English means village).

The city is well known in Germany for its economic prevalence in the fashion and advertising industry. Tourism is a large contributor to the city’s economy especially in July every year when around 4.5 million people visit the city for the largest fair on the Rhine River called the “Großte Kirmes am Rhein”. This is one of Germany’s biggest fun fairs and tradition dates back to 1435.

Many tourists are drawn to visit Düsseldorf for its nightlife, shopping and trade fairs. The city is home to the Boot Messe that is one of the world's biggest trade fairs for watersports and boats.

The best place to start exploring the city is a visit to Altstadt (Old Town). This is where most of the capital’s art and culture venues can be found and Old Town is a great place for food and entertainment with more than 260 pubs making it the perfect place to try a traditional locally brewed German ale.

The Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Opera House) on the outskirts of Old Town is very popular amongst many who appreciate opera and live musical performances. Art lovers will enjoy a visit to Museum Kunstpalast located in the center of Düsseldorf that is internationally renowned for its high quality exhibitions.

For shopping in Düsseldorf the best place to visit is Königsallee (Kö) that is the city’s hot spot for fashion with designer shops, luxury jewellers and numerous upmarket boutiques in a very impressive part of the city. The west side of Kö is also the centre for many of the city's luxury five star hotels.

Before you leave Düsseldorf make sure to see Palace and Park Benrath. The Palace was built between 1756 and 1773 for Elector Carl Theodor and is home to three wonderful museums being the Corps de Logis, Museum for Landscape Art and the Natural Science Museum.
