Hanover or as known in German, Hannover is the capital city of the German state of Lower Saxony situated on the River Leine. Hanover dates back to pre medieval times and Hanover was once the family seat of the Hanoverian Kings of Great Britain making the city rich in heritage and culture.

One of the biggest drawcards for tourism is the Hannover Oktoberfest fair held every year that sees a million visitors coming to the city making it the third biggest Oktoberfest in the world. The Schützenfest (Marksmen’s Festival) is another of Hanover’s great annual events and the largest in the world with the fair featuring a target shooting competition dating back to its inception in the Middle Ages.

Hanover is internationally recognised as one of the leading Exhibition cities in the world. Events such as Domotex, Ligina, Agritechnica and the Hannover Messe draw huge crowds of international visitors. The city is also home of the CeBit, the world’s largest international computer exhibition.

For sightseeing many start their holiday experience in Old Town, a part of Hanover that contains the most historical buildings with the upper Burgsraße being home to a half-timbered building dating back to 1566 and close by is Hanover’s oldest church the Kreuzkirche built in 1333.

Hanover’s most famous tourist attraction is the Great Gardens of Herrenhausen. The gardens are a heritage of the Kings of Hanover with the French gardener Martin Charbonnier commissioned by Sophia of Hanover to create a masterpiece, which after 300 years is still one of the world’s most fascinating gardens to see.

Another eye opener in Hanover is the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) built in 1913. The new town hall is the residence for the Mayor of Hanover however is open to visitors and sometimes holds fantastic art exhibitions. If you are feeling a little peckish then why not even stop for a bite to eat at the Gartensaal restaurant located behind town hall overlooking the pond and splendid park gardens.
