Heidelberg Information

Heidelberg is a very popular tourist destination in Germany located in the state of Baden-Wüttemberg on the River Neckar. Heidelberg was once the Electorate of the Palinate for the Holy Roman Empire and the Heidelberg is most famous for Heidelberg Castle and the picturesque and romantic scenery of the surrounding countryside.

The history of Heidelberg is very extraordinary dating back to its first known recording in the middle ages in 769 AD where it was formerly known as Bergheim (Mountain Home). The city is home to Heidelberg University and the Heidelberg library founded in 1421 is the oldest public library in Germany.

Altstadt (Old Town) on the south bank of the Neckar River is the hottest spot to start your holiday experience. The main street of old town is a mile long pedestrian street leading to the old stone bridge that was built in 1788. The marketplace with town hall is the best place stop for a refreshing drink or traditional German meal with plenty of great restaurants, cafes and bars available.

For sightseeing a must do is Heidelberg Castle that was voted as number out of 100 tourist sites in Germany. The gothic castle was once the royal residence of Prince Elector Ruprecht the third from 1398-1410. The castles interior is spectacular and a guided tour is well recommended for the full experience. During summer months the castle stages the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra in the grounds bringing ambience to scenery second to none.

The Heidelberg Mountain Railway is another must experience holiday activity. The funicular railway runs from Kornmarkt in old town to Heidelberg Castle then to an upper station at Molkenkur and a second section goes to Königstuhl (Kings Chair) mountain, that offers the very best view over Heidelberg city.

An annual event not to miss is the Heidelberg Christmas Market in historic Old Town. The markets make the ideal place to be Christmas time and there are over 140 stalls selling everything from delicious German cuisine, cakes and treats to the most enchanting gifts to take back home.
