Kassel Information

Kassel is located on the Fulda River and the city’s name is derived from “Castellum Cattorum” that was the castle for the Chatti Germanic tribe that lived in the area since Roman times.

Two of Kassel’s most famous residents were the academics and linguists Jacob and William Grimm known as Brothers Grimm (1785-1863). The brothers were the publishers of German folk tale stories with the likes of Snow White, Cinderella as well as Hansel and Gretel being some of their best works. Since the fairytale stories are so famously known all over the world, that makes the Brothers Grimm Museum one of the best tourist attraction.

Schloss Wilhelmshöe is one of many great historical buildings located in the environmental splendour of Bergpark (Mountain Park). The palace started as a monastery in the 12th century and was later converted to an opulent castle for the kings and emperors of Europe. In modern times it has become the Wilemshöhe Museum that houses one of the largest collections of artworks from the famous artist Rembrandt. On the grounds of Bergpark Wilhelmshöe is the Hercules monument that is another great attraction with its cascade of water feature (Wasserspiele) being a delight to visitors.

Another marvellous historical structure is Orangerie located in the grounds of Karlsaue. The term “Orangery” comes from the French word and means “Orange Tree House” and the former summer residence of Count Carl features some of the best landscaped gardens in Kassel.

Löwenburg (Lion’s Castle) is built in the mountains of High Hawk Forest and is another great historic place to visit. The medieval castle built in Gothic style architecture features a dungeon, church and numerous historical weapons and armoury.

Kassel is home to the Fridericianum that is one of the oldest public museums in Europe housing some great artefacts and artworks on historical Kassel. The museum is also used for artistic events such as Documenta that is a 100-day art exhibition held only once every 5 years.
