Neubrandenburg Information

Neubrandenburg is a city in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on the lake Tollensesee. The city is nicknamed “Stadt der Vier Tore” which means city of four gates and is famous for its brick Gothic medieval architecture. Johann I, Margrave of Brandenburg officially founded the town in 1248 although Premonstratensian monks were settled in the area beforehand.

The impressive Stargarder Tor, Neues Tor, Treptower Tor and Friedlander Tor (the four city gates) are of course the star tourist attraction and a symbol to the city of Neubrandenburg. The Treptow Gate is also the site of the Neubrandenburg Regional Museum, one of the oldest museums of cultural history in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

In front of the Teptow Gate lies the Four-Wheeled Mill, the oldest flour mill of the town established in 1278 by Miller Bernhard. The mill was once the greatest flour mill in Mecklenburg and today the building is open for guests and visitors to see.

Another stunning building is Marienkirche (St. Mary’s Church). Completed in 1298 it is the main church of Neubrandenburg with its classic red brick gothic architecture. In 1990 it was transformed into a concert hall providing perfect acoustics for musical performances.

The Kunstsammlung (Art Gallery and Museum) is another great attraction in Neubrandenburg. The collection contains more than 6,000 works of art with paintings, sculptures and graphics contained in a 400 square metre exhibition space.

For shopping, the best place in Neubrandenburg is Marketplace Center where there are around 70 stores, perfect for all your holiday shopping needs. Nearby Marketplace Center is new square with some amazing fountains.

After sightseeing in the city, you may want to head to the shore of Lake Tollense where you will find the Belvedere, a summer house of the Duke Adolf Freidrich IV built in 1775. Belvedere means beautiful view and this place is no exaggeration as it offers a magnificent view over the Tollensee.
