Florence Information

Florence is the capital city of the Tuscany region of Italy with a population of about 400,000 people. Located on the Arno River it is well known for the bridges of Ponte Vecchio and Santa Trinita. The Ponte Vecchio is one of Europes oldest stone bridges built in Roman times.

History is rife in Florence with significant influences from the Middle Ages and Renaissance period. Roman Dictator Julius Caesar established Florence in 59BC who first named the city Florentia meaning “The Flourishing”.

The Architecture of Florence is amazing with hundreds of historical churches, monuments and buildings to see. The Duomo cathedral dominates the Florence skyline and is the architectural crown of the city attracting millions of tourists every year. The Basilica of Santa Croce Catholic Church is also very popular for its architecture and being the resting place of some of Italy’s famous people including Michaelangelo.

Another great attraction is the main towns square Piazza della Signoria that includes the historical town hall the Palazzo Veccio. The Piazza is built in a L-shape and was the birthplace of the Florentine Republic.

For art lovers Florence contains the world famous Uffizi Gallery. The Gallery is one of the oldest galleries in the world and once was the offices of the Florentine magistrates in the 1500’s. Some of the best masterpieces include the works of Leonardi da Vinci, Raphael, Rembandt, Sandro Botticelli, Giotto and Michelangelo.

Nature lovers will also find several Botanical Gardens spread throughout Florence. One of the best is the Boboli Gardens, which is a traditional 16th century style Italian garden. The Gardens also feature Roman sculptures, statues, sculptures, ponds and a garden temple.

Music and Theatres are another attraction with The Odeon Cinema the Teatro della Pergola (Opera House) being the best.
