Verona Information

Verona is a large Italian city with a population of about 300,000 people. Many tourists visit Verona for its cultural and artistic heritage in particular several annual shows, fairs and operas that attract visitors in droves. The City is the site of the Verona Arena a Roman amphitheatre built way back in AD 30 and is still used today for opera performances. The amphitheatre is the best-known attraction in Verona.

Another great Roman structure in Verona is the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore. Built as a shrine to patron saint Zeno, the church is also the famous place of the marriage of Romeo and Juliet a setting written about by the famous Shakespeare. The crypt and the nave are popular along with the central church, which features great artworks like the crucifix by Lorenzo Veneziano.

For fantastic view of Verona the observation deck at the Piazza dei Singori is the best place visit. The Piazza has some amazing architecture and is a tourist hot spot.

The Arco dei Gavi is another great tourism attraction. Built by a noble Roman Family it is situated to the heart of the gateway leading to the city. During the Napolic rule it was demolished and in 1932 it was rebuilt next to Catle Vecchio where it stands today.

Environmentalists will also enjoy Sigurtà Park in Verona. The wildlife park and gardens also contain a cemetery with the history of Verona.

Many famous and notable people in history originate from Verona. In particular writers, poets, musicians and artists top the list creating the vibrant atmosphere and flavour of Verona. It was also the favourite place for Julius Caesar to enjoy his holidays.

A fantastic event to see in Verona is the Arezzo Giostra del Signori. The event is a re-enactment of historical knights that jousted in the 1200ís and is a colourful and interesting display of Italian history.
