Hamilton Information

Hamilton is the fourth largest city located in the Waikato region just 130 kilometres from Auckland. Hamilton is recognised as the second fastest growing region in New Zealand in particular due to education sector with over 40,000 students studying at universities located in Hamilton.

The city is located on the banks of the Waikato River, Hamilton has it all from magnificent parks and gardens for nature lovers to a bustling and vibrant cultural precinct filled with plenty of action and nightlife.

Throughout the city there are plenty of walking trails running along Lake Rotoroa and Waikato River on the city’s main foreshore. The 11 kilometres of pathways offer the best biking or walking experiences to take in the wildlife while relaxing and unwinding watching the boats on the river go bye.

If you are familiar with the Rocky Horror Picture Show a must visit place in Hamilton is the Riff Raff statue located on the southern end of Victoria Street. The statue commemorates Richard O’Brien who lived in Hamilton.

Another great place see is Hamilton Gardens off State Highway 1, Cobham Drive. At the entrance of the gardens is the Maori heritage sculpture of Earth Blanket, a pebble cloak designed to protect and honour the wonder of Mother Earth.

The central city district is packed with heaps of shopping malls and variety stores. For fresh produce there are three excellent markets not to miss being the Hamilton Markets on Commerce Street Saturdays from 8am-1pm, Hamilton East Market in the grey Street Shopping Centre Saturdays from 8am-1pm and the Farmer’s Market at the River Road Car park Sundays from 8am-12pm.

For wine connoisseurs there are plenty of vineyards in the surrounding regions of Hamilton. One of the most popular is Hilltop Wines on Penacarrow Road in Hamilton.
