Kaitaia Information

Kaitaia is a small town with a population of about 6,000 people located in the far north region of New Zealand. Tourism is a major industry as Kaitaia is situated on the southernmost part of the Ninety Mile beach being a major drawcard in attracting visitors.

The town of Kaitaia is proud to be one of New Zealandís oldest towns in the north region and was first established in 1834 by missionaries Joseph Matthews and William Puckey. Kaitaia also boasts a long history of traditional Maori occupation and is a great tourist destination for both European history mixed with Maori flavour and culture.

Nearby attractions are numerous and the main town is a bustling community offering plenty of bars, cafťís, nightclubs and shopping places on your perfect holiday. Most however visit Kaitaia for the wonderful beach lifestyle for excellent adventures such as horse treks, surfing, kite surfing, diving, fishing, boating, quad bike rides and more.

A must see place in Kaitaia is Matthews Vintage Collection Museum. Wyn and Lyn Matthews boast some of the best collection of vintage cars; antique farming machining and memorabilia on the planet and the museum is open 7 days a week for your enjoyment.

Another great attraction is to take a tour on a bus through the nearby Te Paki region and ninety-mile beach. The exciting tours offer an informative perspective of the region and stop for your enjoyment to experience some fun activities like sand boarding and wonderful scenery along one of New Zealandís best kept secret coastlines.
