New Plymouth Information

New Plymouth is the largest city in the Taranaki region of New Zealand with a population around 55,000 people. The name originates from the English town of Plymouth as many Englishmen migrated to the area in early European settlement.

A major attraction to New Plymouth is nearby Egmont National Park and Mt Taranaki that is located just 20 kilometres from the city centre. The city is also conveniently located on the coast so a holiday in New Plymouth offers the best of both beach and the nature lifestyle for one great holiday.

New Plymouth has four main beaches along the coastline for your enjoyment being Back Beach, East End Beach, Fitzroy Beach and Ngamoutu Beach. Located just 15 kilometres east however is another great attraction not to miss being the Whitecliffs Walkway. Although being closed between July to September, Whitecliffs Walkway is an awe inspiring nature walk along massive coastal cliffs and native forest along the black sandy beach.

For more wonderful nature experiences the Brooklands Zoo is another big hit with tourists and travellers. Featuring everything from farmyard animals to rare monkeys, otters, meekerats and colourful birds it makes the perfect day out and is located at Pukekura Park in the centre of town.

An excellent attraction in the centre of the city is the Govett Brewster Art Gallery that is a must see place for any art lover. The gallery is internationally recognised and is more than just a gallery but also a museum that fosters the development and interpretation of contemporary art.

Shopping is also abundant in the heart of the city. The main street (Courtney Street) is well known for its excellent boutique stores and cafes. The side streets are also recommended for any traveller as there are many hidden gem stores which are contained off the main street.
