Russell Information

Russell is a popular tourist town situated in the Bay of Islands in New Zealand. Formerly known as Kororareka by the Maori people, Russell was advantageous with early European settlement as it offered safe anchorage for trading. Today Russell is well known as being the gateway to the Bay of Islands, a large group of some 140 sub tropical islands.

The ocean lifestyle, numerous nature walks and treks are big drawcards in attracting tourist to Russell. When arriving one of the most awesome ways to discover the area is to take the Twin Coast Cycle Trail. The trail is challenging and usually takes 2 days to complete but the 84km journey is well worth the effort as you will capture the heritage of the area.

Some of the best land attractions and sights to see near Russell include the Pompallier Mission and Printery, Flagstaff Hill, The Russell Museum, and Christ Church which is New Zealandís oldest church dating back to the earliest years of European settlement. If you are looking for a great nearby winery and magical place to eat, Paroa Bay Winery offers some very delicious meals with spectacular views.

While staying in Russel it is highly recommended to experience being on the water. There are plenty of great fishing charters, snorkelling and diving tours and kayaks and stand up paddle boards for rent in the area. One of the most popular is a scenic tour around the Urupukapuka, Moturua, Motuarohia and Waewaetorea islands.
