Taupo Information

Taupo is situated on the edge of Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest freshwater lake sitting in a caldera of a volcano. Taupo is popular for holidaymakers visiting hot springs and enjoying outdoor water sports from fishing and water-skiing to jet-boating. In the Mãori Language the town is known as Taupõ-nui-a-Tia which means “The great cloak of Tia”.

One of the star attractions to Taupo is jet-boating while seeing Huka Falls, which is a set of waterfalls on the Waikato River which runs through the town. For those not into jet boats the footbridge offers spectacular views where you can see the 220,000 litres per second waterfall up close.

Another great attraction is the Craters of the Moon Geothermal Walk. The 45-minute loop on the wooden boardwalk takes you through some amazing bubbling craters and steaming vents which is well worth the effort and the small entry fee.

For those who love seafood, the Huka Prawn Park located just minutes from Taupo town centre is an amazing prawn park where you can catch your own prawns and have them cooked fresh in the adjacent restaurant. The park also has plenty of entertainment for the whole family including water bikes, Children’s playground, tree climb and a treasure hunt.

Some more great things to do include, seeing some historical Mãori rock carvings located at nearby Mine Bay, talking a walk through the Waipahihi Botanic Gardens and taking a fishing charter or scenic cruise on lake Taupo. For the fitness enthusiast Kayaking or mountain biking the region is very enjoyable and for the sporting pacifist how about a round of golf at the local golf club.

Other attractions to keep you entertained while in Taupo include Parasailing, the Bruce McLaren Motorsports Park where you can race cars, White Water world, 4wd tours motorbike, The Taupo museum and a visit to the Volcanic Activity Centre.
