Whangarei Information

Whangarei is the capital of the Northland region in New Zealand with a population of about 52,000 people. The area was first found by Captain Cook sailing on the Endeavour however the native Maori New Zealanders occupied the area for centuries prior to white settlement.

Whangarei City is the ideal place for a getaway with plenty of entertainment, great food and things to do. The Town Basin Marina in the heart of the city is a popular waterfront development and features several art galleries, specialty shops and restaurants with one of its biggest attractions being the National Clock Museum.

Outside the city there are some of the worlds finest natural wonders to discover. A top tourist attraction is Whangarei Falls that has a reputation of being the most photographed waterfall in New Zealand and is located just 5 kilometres from the city.

For the outdoor hiker there are plenty of excellent walking track and sightseeing places. A popular nature trip is to do the Smugglers cove track and if you love the beach lifestyle one of the most popular visited beaches is Ocean Beach at Whangarei Heads. The pristine white sand dunes also make it a great place for sandboarding.

The central bay of Whangarei is called Beam Bay and named after Captain Cooks men that when took shelter in the Bay reportedly caught so many Bream he nicknamed the bay after his massive haul of fish. Today anglers can still enjoy this pristine paradise with so many areas to fish that you may need to add another month to your holiday to discover them all.

For a great scenic view over the Whangarei the Mt Lion lookout is a must experience wonder. Overlooking the city and bay area it is no wonder why New Zealand has gained the reputation of being the last great wonder in the world.
