Denver, Colorado

The City of Denver is located in the state of Colorado on the South Platte River Valley just east of the Front Range near the Rocky Mountains. Denver is one of the highest major cities in the US with an elevation of one mile above sea level earning its nickname the Mile High City.

Founded in 1858 as a mining town during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush Era, Denver quickly grew with new migrants arriving and once the city was connected to the Trans Continental Railroad network it established itself as an important supply and service center attracting wealth and prosperity. Still prosperous today, Denver ranks in the Forbes top 10 lists for the best places to live in for Careers and Business.

Being located near the Rocky Mountains is a big drawcard for Denver in attracting tourist with many coming to experience the natural wonders surrounding the city. The Mount Evans Scenic Byway is an awesome high altitude scenic drive that is highly recommended. The highway is the highest paved road in North America leading to plenty of national parks and forests where you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, climbing and nature walks.

For those who prefer city life, Denver is not one to disappoint and a great place to start is visiting the Denver Art Museum, Kirkland Museum, Clyfford Still Museum, Forney Transportation Museum or the Colorado State Capitol and Union Station for great historical sites. The Denver Center for the Performing Arts and the Denver Center Theatre Company are the best to watch a show but for a more unusual and interesting attraction go to Adams Mystery Playhouse.

Watching a sporting event is also recommended with the Sports Authority Field being home to the Denver Broncos, Coors Field home to the Colorado Rockies and the Pepsi Center home to the Denver Nuggets and the Colorado Avalanche. If sport is to slow then Elitch Gardens Theme Park should wake you up with its thrill rides.

Held every year in January is the National Western Stock Show. First held in 1905 it is today the biggest stock show parade and rodeo recognised internationally and one not to miss if coming to Denver.
