Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis is the largest city in the US State of Tennessee located on the Mississippi River famous for its cultural contributions in music with the likes of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, BB King, Justin Timberlake and many more renowned musicians having called Memphis home. The city was also the scene for the Martin Luther King assassination at the Lorraine Motel in 1968.

The King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley’s home Graceland is the star attraction to Memphis with more than half a million visitors per year. The mansion serves as a museum and is the actual place where Elvis died with the memorial garden containing his gravestone along with his parents and stillborn twin brother Jesse.

Memphis soul, blues and rock and roll were all founded in the city so the famous and historic Beale Street is a must visit place that should be on everyone’s itinerary. Beale Street is located in Downtown Memphis and is the scene for various festivals and outdoor concerts throughout the year. Sun Studio is located nearby at Union Avenue where Elvis Presley actually recorded his first song.

Not just about music, Memphis has some very big names in film and cinema like Morgan Freeman, Shannen Doherty, Cybil Shepherd and Chris Parnell all originating from Memphis. The Orpheum Theatre, TheatreWorks and Theatre Memphis are great places to enjoy a Broadway show and who knows you might just be watching the next big Hollywood star actor.

Sightseeing the city, a great place to start is the many museums with the likes of the National Civil Rights, Withers Collection, Belz, Memphis Brooks, Pink Palace and Burke Estate Museum’s being some great ones to see. The Stax Museum of American Soul Music and the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum are of course the most popular ones not to miss.

Once a sporting Arena but now converted into a shopping centre by Bass Pro, the Memphis Pyramid on the banks of the Mississippi River is the place to go for shopping with the megastore including an observation deck at its apex.
