San Francisco Information

San Francisco is located in the US State of California and is the second most densely populated city in the USA founded in 1776. The name is derived from “Saint Francis” in Spanish, as many Spaniards were the first to settle before the California Gold rush. San Francisco is well known for its landmark the Golden Gate Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in the world and remembered for the 1906 earthquake that destroyed 80 percent of the city.

With a vibrant city life and streets abuzz with ongoing activity, San Francisco attracts more than 7 to 8 million tourists every year. The number one tourist attraction is Alcatraz Island, the former federal prison made even more famous being featured in cinema films like The Book of Eli, X-Men, The Rock, Star Trek, Catch Me If You Can and of course the classic Escape from Alcatraz.

There are many neighbourhoods to explore in San Francisco so its advisable to take a city tour or catch one of the many cable cars. A great place to start is the northeast quadrant of Market Street and Union Square that marks the historic part of the city. Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 at the waterfront are also popular especially for its many restaurants and fine dining.

Other great neighbourhoods not to miss seeing include Russian Hill, Nob Hill and the most awesome Presidio Boulevard where you can see famous Lombard Street with its eight hairpin turns on a steep incline. Alamo Square is also worth a visit for the interesting residential houses overlooking much of downtown San Francisco.

For action and entertainment, see the Giants play a baseball game at the AT & T Park stadium, visit the Palace of Fine Arts, The Exploratorium, Walt Disney Family Museum, de Young Museum, San Francisco Opera and the San Francisco Ballet just to mention a few.

While enjoying San Francisco who knows you may even bump into some famous people, as the list of notables is endless with Danny Glover, Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks, Rob Schneider and Courtney Love, just a few out of thousands coming from San Francisco.
