Tasmania Holiday Destinations

Tasmania is the often forgotten and neglected Australian State situated 240 kilometers from the southern coast of the continent with a population of just over 500,000 is a rare gem of historical and archaeological value that has a lot more to offer than you first envisage.

The one time home of the largest modern carnivorous marsupial, the Thylacine (or Tassie Tiger as it was better known), now believed extinct, is currently the home of the next largest carnivorous marsupial, the Tasmanian Devil, a ferocious and powerful squat shaped animal that resembles a mix between a large dog and a bear. Tasmania, once joined to the mainland of Australia in a volcanic edifice that was cut-off from the mainland over 10,000 years ago as the oceans rose after the last glacial period.

There is plenty to do and see on this mountainous rock of Australia. With over a third of the country deemed National Parks or World Heritage Sites, the un spoilt natural beauty of this rugged landscape, is unlike any other in the World.

The main areas of interest are Hobart, the Islandís capital and the finishing post for the famous Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, the Royal Launceston Show, the Falls Music Festival at Marion Bay and the Targa Tasmanian Road Rally, a five day event encompassing the whole state.

For the outdoor types there is the Overland Track to Lake St Clair, one of Australiaís toughest and best-known Bush Walks through Cradle Mountain. Hastings Caves State Reserve where you can amble through the rich forests, explore Newdegate Cave or simply relax in the luxuriously warm waters of a natural thermal pool. There is also the Art, Heritage and Vineyards of the Huon Valley, the Historic Sights of Port Arthur and the Food, Wine and History of the famous Tamar Valley.

Visit the oldest Brewery in Australia, the Cascade Brewery Company, nestled in the hills south of Hobart with the fantastic Wellington Mountain as its backdrop; this historical site is a natural attraction to history buffs and beer lovers alike. Tasmania is action packed with holiday attractions and activities to do.
